The wooden frame has three main parts: the sill, or horizontal strip along the bottom of the frame; the jamb, the vertical sides of the frame; and the head, the top horizontal stripe on the wooden frame. The sash also has several components. Stiles are the vertical sections of the sash. A window frame is the combination of the head, jambs, and sill that forms a precise opening in which a window sash fits. On some styles of buildings, it is common to have shutters to cover the doors as well as the windows.
